Imam thrown out of mosque ……. For preaching against gay attacks

Abdul Ganiyu Ali, the Imam of a mosque at Nima in Accra, was last Friday dragged off the pulpit and thrown out of the mosque by his congregation.

The incident occurred when the Imam started preaching against the attacks and killing of gay persons in the community, as part of his Friday sermon, Kalilu Musah, an eyewitness told this reporter.

“This Imam, instead of using the platform to preach about something beneficial to a group that had gathered for a religious purpose, started condemning his own congregation for attacking homosexuals. As if on cue, everybody in the mosque started the agitation at the same time, and before he knew it, they had thrown him out (of the mosque),” the witness said.

According to him, the parents of children have also started withdrawing their wards from the Imam’s Islamic school, for fear that the Imam might indoctrinate their children against homophobia.

It was gathered that an anti-gay vigilante group operating in Nima among other communities has also placed Imam Abdul Ganiyu Ali on its wanted list.
