The Director of Policy Planning, Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the National Commission on Culture (NCC) Mr. Fio Richardson Commey has indicated that adult content on social media, especially TikTok has been having a negative impact on Ghanaian children.
According to him, there must be regulations to guide the usage of mobile phones among children in order to prevent them from accessing content that is above their age limit.
Speaking on the issue of cyberspace risks to children, he opined that Ghana must imitate other European countries that are creating boundaries on mobile phone usage among children.
“We have a proposal to the current team that is working on the new cultural policy that we need a clear guide on our media and cyberspace in this country. We really need a clear guide as South Africa and other countries in Africa are doing”.
“We need a very good and robust digital space that will be able to make sure that if I pick a phone or my father buys me a phone and there is a need to input my particulars, my date of birth and everything in, automatically I should be restricted from certain sites based on the age I put there. And I think it is done in other jurisdictions so you see young people with iPhones and all that, perhaps it is only games they are playing. Because there are certain sites you may not get access to because of certain content,” he said in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Joy.
Mr. Fio Richardson Commey urged the media to also use their channel to educate children more on Ghana’s rich culture in order to shun uneducated content on social media.
