SHS graduate allegedly lynched at a ‘galamsey’ site near Denkyira Obuasi

A 22-year-old Senior High School (SHS) graduate, identified as Evans Wireko, is reported to have been lynched at a ‘galamsey’ site by some people at Fobinso near Denkyira Obuasi now New Obuasi in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region.

One other person is alleged to be in critical condition and receiving treatment at the Dunkwa Ayanfuri Government Hospital.

It is reported that the deceased, who lived at Denkyira Ayanfuri, went to a mining site at Fabinso with his friend to engage in galamsey, it was in the process that the two were attacked with stones and sticks, resulting in the passing of Evans but his friend managed to escape.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Dunkwa-On-Offin government hospital while the police have commenced an investigation into the matter.

Denkyira Obuasi, now New Obuasi, have been known for the lynching of Major Maxwell Mahama.

The posthumous Major was murdered on May 29, 2017, by some youth of Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region on suspicion that he was an armed robber.

The incident reportedly happened after a snail seller spotted a pistol on him when he was on his routine morning jogging and was lynched.

When news emerged that they had killed an army officer, a lot of Ghanaians were enraged after a video emerged on social media showing how Major Mahama was killed.

The inhabitants of Denkyira Obuasi suffered an intense backlash from Ghanaians both at home and abroad.

Remorseful residents of Denkyira Obuasi, where Major Maxwell Adam Mahama’s life was taken in a mob action, preferred a police station in his memory to his statue.

They believe the absence of police in the town largely contributed to the lawlessness that resulted in the soldier’s death.
