Two persons believed to be behind the trafficking of foreign nationals to engage in begging in Ghana have been arrested by the police in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects, a driver, and his accomplice were apprehended on Monday, February 13 after some 20 Nigeriens they transported to Ghana were left at a basic school in the Asokore Mampong Municipality.

While the Nigeriens said they were traveling to Ivory Coast from Niger, the driver and his accomplice insisted Ghana is the intended destination.

The foreign nationals were then left in the open for three days before officials of the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly intervened.

This follows a similar incident where some Nigerien nationals were left stranded on the Achimota N1 highway in October 2022.

They were allegedly traveling to Côte d’Ivoire on a bus from Niamey, Niger, but were dropped by the driver of the vehicle at the Achimota overhead.

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) intervened and rounded them up.

All women, with some carrying children, were rounded up during a decongestion exercise in Accra organized by the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and led by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr. Henry Quartey.

Meanwhile, some foreign beggars are returning to communities in the Ashanti Region after over 700 of them were recently repatriated.
