Two armed robbers on a motorbike on Wednesday invaded Walewale township in the North East Region where they attacked a mobile money vendor and bolted with some unspecified amount of money.
The two were using an unregistered motorbike, eyewitnesses said and attacked the mobile money vendor after he had visited the bank to withdraw money for transactions.
Reports say the gunmen on their arrival started shooting indiscriminately.
An eyewitness said that “people were running helter-skelter for safety because the armed robbers just opened fire to intimidate anyone around.”
“They nearly shot me because I was just sitting near his table at the time they started the shooting. They were shooting anyhow so people could not withstand the sounds of the guns,” a resident said.
After two of their patrol cars were damaged, the police were left without a vehicle to deal with the problem in the West Mamprusi Municipality.
According to the eyewitnesses, the police arrived late at the robbery scene after the gunmen had left.
The police say they are investigating the case.
