Ghana’s Men’s Hockey Team has been denied a famous win against Canada in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The team was en route to a 1-0 win over Canada (ranked 13th in the world) in the preliminary stage of the Men’s Competition before a last-second penalty pulled Canada even to deny Ghana its maiden win in the competition.
Benjamin Kwofie’s 10th-minute goal was Ghana’s first in the competition and Ghanaian Goalie Duisberg Offei won the Man of the Match Award after pulling off a string of outstanding saves.
However, a block made by the body and not a stick by a Ghanaian player led to the referee pointing to the penalty spot to set up Keegan Pereira’s equalizer.
Ghana is ranked 36th in the world and is yet to win a game after losing 11-0 to India earlier in the competition; the West African nation plays Wales on Wednesday, August 3.
Wales lost 2-4 to England in a previous game and ranks third in the five-team Pool B standings with a win and a loss while Ghana ranks bottom in the Pool with zero wins and a draw in three games.
