Black Maidens record big win in Guinea

The Black Maidens of Ghana secured a comfortable 3-1 advantage in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier third-round first-leg tie against Guinea in Conakry.

Ghana got off to a good start at the Stade Général Lansana Conté de Nongo and was awarded the first goal in the 13th-minute courtesy of captain Georgina Aoyem. She was in the right position to find the net after Zuleiha had headed down Ghana’s corner kick.

The Maidens continued to dominate the game and were rewarded with the second in the 31st minute when Pearlpia Ladies’ Rasheeda Sahadu found the top right corner of the Guinea post from a left-foot strike outside the 18-yard box.

The home side tried to pull one back before the halftime whistle but were unlucky as goalkeeper Amina Ahamadu provided a good save to ensure Ghana went into the break with a 2-0 win.

Coach Nuhu’s girls had an opportunity to score the third goal, but a solo effort by Constance Agyeman was ruled out for offside.

The second half began with the Guineans chasing a comeback and managed to pull one back through an own goal just three minutes into the second period of the game.

However, Mariama Maltiti Iddi of Pearlpia Ladies restored Ghana’s two-goal advantage just before the hour mark to make it 3-1.

The result puts the Black Maidens in a good position to qualify for the fourth round as they host Guinea at the Cape Coast Stadium on Saturday, April 30, for the second leg of the third round qualifier tie.

The aggregate winner of the fixture will advance into the fourth and final round to battle either Niger or Morocco over two legs.

The Maidens are looking forward to picking one of Africa’s three slots in the India 2022 Fifa U-17 Women’s World Cup which comes off in October.
