The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) have appointed Portugal’s Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the country’s national team.
His appointment comes after the EFA sacked head coach Hossam El-Badry on Monday following the team’s 1-1 draw with Gabon in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Despite not losing a single game, the former Al Ahly boss has been heavily criticized for the team’s underwhelming performances and squad selections.
Queiroz will be assisted by Diaa El Said as General Manager, Mohamed Shawky as Manager, and Legend Essam El Hadry as Goalkeeper’s coach.
The 68-year old previously handled Portugal’s national team on two occasions, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Iran and Colombia.
He has been a free agent since leaving Colombia last December due to a poor start in the World Cup qualifiers. Overall, he led The Tricolors in 18 games, winning nine while drawing four and losing the remaining five games.
His last game in charge saw Colombia suffer a humiliating 6-1 defeat to Ecuador and Queiroz also failed to make it past the quarter-finals of the 2019 Copa America after a penalty shootout defeat to Chile.
At club level, Queiroz has managed the likes of Real Madrid where he won the Spanish Super Cup and spent two spells as Alex Ferguson’s assistant manager at English Premier League club Manchester United.
He is expected to arrive in Egypt later this week.
