3 aspirants file to contest NDC primaries ahead of Akwatia by-election

Three people have submitted their nomination forms to compete in the upcoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries for the Akwatia Constituency by-election.

Among the candidates are former Member of Parliament Henry Boakye, current NDC Akwatia Constituency Secretary Bernard Bediako Baidoo, and Erasmus Koney Ali.

According to the party’s schedule, these candidates, along with any others who file their nominations by the deadline on Wednesday, July 30, will be vetted on Thursday, July 31, 2025.

Balloting will take place shortly thereafter to determine their positions ahead of the primaries set for Monday, 4 August 2025.

This internal contest arises following the passing of the sitting MP, prompting the need for a by-election in the constituency.

Meanwhile, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has settled on Solomon Kwame Asumadu, Chief Executive of Owuo Mining Company, as its candidate for the parliamentary seat.

This decision, according to the party, resulted from thorough consultations with stakeholders, leading to a unanimous agreement rather than a contested primary.

This by-election in Akwatia has become necessary due to the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament for the constituency, Ernest Kumi, on July 7, 2025.
