One person has been killed after unknown gunmen shot at a bus travelling from Bawku to Bolgatanga.
The gunmen ambushed the bus which was under military escort at Bazua in the Upper East Region.
The bullets hit six passengers before the military officers brought the situation under control, preventing more casualties.
One of the victims died on the spot while the other five, some critically injured were rushed to the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga for medical attention.
While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, it is reportedly linked to the ongoing chieftaincy conflict in Bawku.
This incident brings the total number of deaths in the area to 46 since the conflict re-emerged in October 2024.
A few days ago, a woman and her two children were tragically murdered by gunmen reportedly dressed in military uniforms in Bawku.
The attack took place in Tensungo, near a military camp in the Bawku township, and is believed to be linked to the ongoing chieftaincy conflict in the area.
Assembly member for the Tensungo Electoral Area, Mohammed Saani, confirmed the incident, providing a detailed account of the events.
“Around 2 a.m. this morning, a gunman entered a house and killed a woman and her two children. The incident was reported to me, and I informed the police. The military also came, and we took the bodies to the hospital for confirmation.”
Saani, a family member of the deceased persons also shared the concerns of the family, stating, “When I got to the residence, the family was alleging that the gunman was in uniform, and they believed he would be back to commit more atrocities”.
These latest attacks have heightened tension in the area, which had experienced two weeks of relative calm prior to the incident.
